The Link Between Animal Abuse & Domestic Violence

Did you know your pets have rights too? There is a link between animal abuse and domestic violence. People who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people. It is estimated that 88% of pets living in an abusive household will be abused or killed.

Animal abuse is often one of the first signs of a family in trouble. Veterinarians are starting to play a larger role in reporting abuse of all kinds.

Warning Signs

  • Hitting pets with closed fist
  • Kicking or beating pets
  • Not feeding animal for days
  • Not letting pets out and beating them when they mess in the house
  • Shooting at or terrorizing pets
  • Throwing pets across the room or down the stairs or at the wall
  • Tormenting pets in any way
